Rigas Ritmi Festival 2015 introductory concert

On 6 June, at the Latvian Radio 1 Studio, Rigas Ritmi Festival 2015 presents Danish singer Cæcilie Norby and Swedish base player Lars Danielsson – a great way to start off the city’s most rhythmical music festival.

Cæcilie Norby, for good reasons, is considered Denmark’s queen of vocals; in her 25-year-long music career, she has mastered several music genres – from rock to pop, to jazz and classical music. Cæcilie has been surrounded by music since childhood, as her father is a composer and mother – an opera singer. Over the last few years, Norby has been focusing predominantly on jazz, which outlines her latest CD “Silent Ways” (2013). Last Autumn, she celebrated her 50th birthday with a series of concerts and by hosting the national radio show “P8 Jazz”. Norbi often pleasantly surprises music lovers by recording unusual, light and jazzy covers of popular songs. For example, her selection of David Bowie’s songs in 2012 received international acknowledgement from critics.

The career of base and cello player, composer Swede Lars Danielsson is no less than versatile – he and Cæcilie have had very similar musical experiences and they have collaborated in several projects, including the last two of her albums – “Arabesque” (2011) and “Silent Ways”, mentioned before. His unique lyrical playing and strong groove is well-know and admired throughout the International jazz scene. He has performed together with different artists, including big bands and the Danish Radio Concert Orchestra. Danielsson’s records feature such jazz heavyweights as guitarist John Scofield and drummer Jack DeJohnette. His last album “Liberetto” (2012), featuring the young Armenian piano star Tigran, discloses a new-kind of musical freedom, based on the principles of chamber jazz, classical music and European folk music.

“It is “the sound of the new, European jazz” that vocalist Caecilie Norby stands for like no other,” – Harmonia Mundi

“Danielsson is a masterful bassist!” – Jazzwise UK
