A live stream concert – The Raimonds Pauls Trio. New Music at Jubilee

Marking the 85th birthday of Raimonds Pauls, Cēsis Concert Hall presents a live-streaming concert premiering new compositions by the Maestro of Latvian music.

Raimonds Pauls has long gone down in the history of Latvian pop and jazz music as one of its founders and stalwarts. And yet the Maestro, staying true to his spirit of inexhaustible energy and abundance of ideas, has never stopped writing new music. Not even the current pandemic, which has taken the world by surprise, has been an obstacle for him: it was during these recent months that Pauls wrote a new programme dedicated to his favourite city, Riga.

The composer has always had a particularly soft spot for jazz, and it is exactly this form of music that his latest pieces ‒ performed at the event by the Maestro and two other musical legends, the Estonian double bass player Toivo Unt and Latvian percussionist Māris Briežkalns ‒ belong.

Toivo Unt compares Pauls’ jazz style with Oscar Peterson or Errol Garner, noting that we should not look for some profound jazz philosophy in this music but rather surrender ourselves to the melodies and sensations instead. Furthermore, there is a unique melodiousness to the Maestro’s style that also manifests itself in his instrumental pieces.

The trio of jazz masters will be joined in Cēsis by the charming Sofia Rubina-Hunter, a jazz singer from Estonia, well known outside her homeland as a talented and inspired artist. Rubina-Hunter studied singing at a music college in Sochi, at Konservatorium Cottbus (Germany) and University of Tartu, as well as the prestigious Berklee College of Music (USA). Her 2016 jazz album ‘In the Land of Oo-Bla-Dee’ brought her the Estonian Music Award as the Best Jazz Album of the year.

The online concert will be available for live streaming on Cēsis Concert Hall website at www.cesukoncertzale.lv and Biļešu Paradīze website after purchasing the access code for EUR 8 in advance.
